Sunday April 3, 3 pm: Shirley Horn fused singing with playing the piano, and was a master of delivering a lyric. She was considered a “musician’s musician”, but her music is appreciated by all who are lucky enough to hear her moving song interpretations.
Sunday, April 10, 3 pm: Kevin Mahogany also combined singing with instrumental prowess, having played piano, clarinet and saxophone while growing up in Kansas City. The late jazz singer emerged in the 90s, and during his too-brief career, he established himself as one of the most soulful jazz singers of his generation.
Other upcoming listening classes to be scheduled later: Carmen McRae, Dinah Washington, Mark Murphy, Jon Hendricks, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Frank Sinatra.
